Chapter 10 - The Brush
This page of IGN’s Chicory: A Colorful Tale wiki guide contains a walkthrough for Chapter 10 - The Brush. This chapter is mainly composed of a final boss battle. On this page, we'll guide you through each step of Chapter 10 and provide tips for each phase of the final battle in Chicory: A Colorful Tale.
Defeat the Corruption
After completing the fourth wielder trial, Chapter 10 - The Brush begins. Travel to the Wielder Tower and meet Chicory outside. You’ll be prompted with some responses when you talk to Chicory. You can reply however you’d like; however, you’ll need to agree to destroy the brush. Once you agree to destroy the brush, the conversation ends. Climb the exterior of Wielder Tower. Paint the massive tree on the roof, and it will finally open, allowing you to go inside it. Keep walking into the tree. The directions don’t seem to matter, so keep going up screen after screen until the cutscene begins. You’ll eventually get snared. Destroy the eyeballs as they appear. This won't be enough, however, and the brush gets destroyed. You’ll wake up at your parent’s house in Potluck. If you’d like, you can speak to the rest of your family. When you’re ready to proceed, exit the house. You need to return to Luncheon. You have no brush abilities, and the fast travel doesn’t work. Therefore, you have to somberly walk east from your parent’s house until you reach the outskirts of Luncheon. Don’t bother going through the Nibble Tunnel, that path is blocked. After crossing the Sips River bridge, you’ll reach the outskirts of Luncheon, but you’ll be unable to enter the town because you cannot swim around the trees. Return to the river, and you’ll meet Lemon on the bridge. She informs you that she’ll help you reach Luncheon if you meet her, “one screen left, and two screens down from the bridge” (that’s where the Custom Brush Style artist’s house is). Go there and speak to Lemon. She’ll carry you across the river. After making it to shore, head north, then east. Once in Luncheon, go north and speak to Chicory next to the transit bench. As you speak to Chicory, you’ll remember the brush. When this occurs, press and hold the paint button. Keep holding until a tree sprouts and then eventually blooms behind the bench. With your new brush and all your abilities back, you’re now ready to return to the top of the Wielder Tower and face the menace within!
The Final Showdown
First Phase - The Original Brush
The first phase of the battle has you fighting the Original Brush (which will be referred to as OGB going forward). OGB is shielded and flies around the screen. You’ll be spending most of the fight evading its attacks; so, keep moving and use your jumps to help you dodge! OGB has two main attacks. The first is a tackle that occurs as it quickly strikes across the screen. The second attack is a stomp. This is the one that’ll finally let you attack it back! As it prepares to stomp, OGB hovers over you and creates a highlighted circle over the area it’ll impact. Your best move to avoid this is to jump out of the way as it’s moving down to stomp. After the stomp, its shield breaks away allowing you to get several hits in before the shield returns. It seems that you may be able to cause minor damage to the shield as OGB is flying around, but it’s not effective enough to break it. You’ll mainly need to take advantage of its stomps for the shield to break. You know you’re near the end of the phase, once the OGB starts moving faster and eventually starts chasing you.
Second Phase - Your Copy
After attacking OGB enough times, the second phase begins. OGB disappears and your character’s Copy appears. The Copy cannot be damaged by your brush. However, you’ll discover that you actually have control of the invisible OGB. Though you can’t see OGB, you CAN see the white paint it leaves behind. You’ll need to use OGB to damage the Copy. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple, because not only is OGB invisible, but its movements are reversed. To help you keep track of OGB’s position, continuously move and paint with YOUR brush. Doing this will let you see the white paint it leaves behind.
As the fight progresses, keep a lookout for the stamps of shapes appearing throughout the area. These can hurt you when they explode! Eventually, some balls with two pointed sides start appearing on screen. You can cause these to burst, and they’ll shoot paint in the directions they point to. Keep in mind that if you paint these bombs with your regular brush, they’ll produce regular paint. This won’t damage the Copy! Instead, paint the bombs with OGB’s white paint. This will cause them to explode with the white paint that could potentially hit and damage the Copy.
Once you've damaged the Copy enough, it’ll hop OGB and begin chasing you around the screen. Don’t bother attacking the Copy with your brush. Instead, run and dodge the stamps. Wait for the bombs to appear. Paint them with your brush. Yes, this time use your brush to paint the bombs! Their explosion will knock the Copy off of OGB. You’ll then gain control of OGB again. Use it and its white paint to attack the Copy. You’ll have to do this multiple times until the Copy is finally defeated.
Third Phase - Chicory
After your Copy is defeated, you’ll need to deal with the Copy of Chicory (which will be referred to as CC going forward). You cannot hurt CC at all. Focus solely on your character and dodging CC’s attacks. Eventually though, you’ll be captured and unable to continue moving. Shortly afterward, the real Chicory appears and sets you free!
Chicory will capture CC. While captured, you can finally damage CC with your brush! Eventually, CC breaks free and continues its assault. Since your brush is ineffective while CC is free, position your brush in the center of the screen. This will help you focus on your character so that you could avoid and dodge CC’s attacks as you wait for Chicory to capture CC again. Once CC is captured, you can use your brush again to attack them. Keep going until CC is defeated.
Fourth Phase - Blackberry
After defeating CC, Blackberry’s copy appears. It attacks like it did in the Brunch Canyon Wielder Trial - Master Passing on to Student, except this time it’s super-duper fast! Like with CC, you’ll need to avoid their attacks until Chicory captures it again. It’s possible for Chicory to get trapped by the copy. When this happens, use your brush to attack the claws to free her as soon as possible. The copy’s attacks are huge, but remember that they only damage you when they ignite. Use the paint they leave behind to your advantage! You can swim through it to quickly move around the screen.
Final Phase - The Legacy of the Brush
OGB returns for the final phase. Like the first phase, it’s unable to be damaged due to its shield. However, this time. it also uses many different attacks. Honestly, this fight can feel extremely chaotic and disorienting. There are colors and shapes everywhere! Do your best to focus on your character’s position and avoid the attacks. You need to wait for Chicory to trap OGB. Once it’s trapped, the shield vanishes, and you can attack! Continue fighting until OGB is finally trapped for good. As the aspect ratio of the screen changes, continue with your attacks. Keep smacking it until it finally explodes in a rainbow of colors!
