Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

Diablo 2: Resurrected generates a new map for every game session. Your Automap serves as both a minimap and your best way to navigate the world.

In this Diablo 2 Automap guide, we’ll explain how to turn on your map (minimap overlay) and how you’ll use it.

Turn on the Automap

Turning on the Diablo 2 map is easy enough. Just hit Tab on your keyboard, the Touchpad on your PS4 or PS5 controller, the Minus (-) button on your Nintendo Switch, or the View button on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X controller.

This pulls up a transparent overlay on top of your screen. Depending on your settings — under Options > Gameplay > Automap — you can change the opacity and location of the Automap.

How to use the Automap

Every time you start a new game session in Diablo 2, the map is randomly generated. That means the path you’ll take from one area to the next will be different every game. The Automap helps with that by filling in as you explore.

Use the map to fill in each area you visit. As you wander, you’ll see markers for things like buff Shrines and Waypoints (fast travel locations), as well as entrances and exits to the next area or optional dungeons. More importantly, you’ll see a path — a dirt road for the most part — that you can follow through the area.

The next level of puzzles.

Take a break from your day by playing a puzzle or two! We’ve got SpellTower, Typeshift, crosswords, and more.
