Owens Community College and Bowling Green State University were among 27 Ohio higher education institutes to be awarded Campus Safety Grant funding recently. Owens received $102,800 and BGSU, $102,964.

Last year, the 133rd Ohio General Assembly, passed a bill authorizing $5 million for the program, which assists institutions in improving the overall physical security and safety of their buildings on public campuses throughout the state.

State Representative Haraz Ghanbari co-sponsored the legislation. “I have always been a supporter of improving law enforcement capabilities so that they can efficiently respond to necessary emergencies when needed. I hope this initiative will help provide students and faculty with a more safe and secure environment on our campuses.”

To be eligible for funding schools had to conduct a security and vulnerability assessment to identify potential areas for improvement. Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to improved lighting in parking lots, security cameras at building entrances and secure doors.
