Bulldogs Set to Challenge No. 15 Akron

Zips One of Nation’s Most Successful Programs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A young Yale men's soccer team showed its potential in an impressive 2-0 victory over a strong Boston College team on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs will need a similar effort when they travel to No. 15 Akron on Saturday. Kickoff at FirstEnergy Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
 
Here are notes on the first meeting between the teams.
 
* The Zips are one of the most success programs in all of college soccer. Since 2007, the Akron has posted the highest winning percentage in the nation (as of games on Sept. 19) (.758), with an overall record of 218-58-34. The Zips are followed by Wake Forest, 198-62-37 (.729), Maryland, 205-64-42 (.727), North Carolina, 197-67-45 (.710) and Creighton, 191-76-29 (.694). Akron made 12 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2007-18), earning a first-round bye in eight seasons. The Zips have advanced to the NCAA's Round of 16 in eight of the last 13 years. Since 1961, the Zips have advanced to the NCAA postseason 33 times, including 17 of the past 20 seasons. Akron captured the 2018 and 2010 NCAA Championships and advanced to the national championship game in 2009. 
 
* In a rematch of a 2019 NCAA Tournament first round game, the Bulldogs held Boston College without a shot for nearly 64 minutes on Tuesday on their way to posting their first shutout of the season.
 
* Paolo Carroll continued his strong start to the season, scoring Yale's first goal and assisting on the second. Carroll is 10th in the nation in points per game (2.0) and 17th in goals per game (0.80).
 
* Kahveh Zahiroleslam also had a goal and an assist in the victory over the Eagles. He is second on the team with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists).
 
* Goalkeeper Elian Haddock has played every minute of every game and has made 20 saves.
 
SCOUTING AKRON
 
The Zips (4-2-1) are coming off a 2-0 loss to defending NCAA champion Marshall on Tuesday night. Akron also has victories over Pittsburgh and Michigan State and a tie with Indiana on its resume. Diogo Pacheco leads the team with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists). Akron has outscored its opponents 15-7 on the season. Jared Embick is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Zips.
