NATICK — A man who originally thought he lost his gun near the Lilja Elmentary School in Natick on Thursday actually lost it in the Norwell area on Route 128, authorities said.

The man, who has not been identified, will be summoned to appear in court at a later date and charged with improper use of a firearm.

On Thursday, the man called police at about 12:26 a.m. He said he had accidentally left his handgun on the roof of his car and he believed he lost it near the Bacon Street school.

Natick Police, along with the Massachusetts State Police and a police dog trained to sniff for guns, searched the area around the Lilja School for several hours but could not locate the gun.

The school sent an alert to parents about the gun, and Natick Police had several officers stationed at the school in the morning and afternoon as a precaution that someone stumbled upon the gun.

It is not known how police tracked the handgun to Route 128 or how it was found. The gun was taken to the Norwell state police barracks after a trooper found the gun.

It is not known when the man will appear in court or which court the charges will be filed in.
