SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The driver of an SUV was seriously injured in a crash with a Spring Lake Public Schools bus that caused the bus to tip over.
It happened shortly before 3 p.m. Friday at the intersection of 148th Avenue and Leonard Street in Spring Lake Township. That’s near Spring Lake High School.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses told deputies than a southbound SUV turning left onto Leonard pulled into the path of the eastbound bus, which had the right of way. The vehicles collided head-on, causing the bus to leave the road, hit a utility pole and then roll onto its side.
On the bus were six students, a bus aide and the driver. None of the students nor the driver were injured. The bus aid, a 78-year-old Fruitport man, sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
The driver of the SUV, a 84-year-old Spring Lake man, sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized.
The intersection was shut down so Consumers Energy could fix the broken power pole. A special tow truck also had to be called in to right and haul away the bus. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
