Here’s some news that would definitely merit a mention on “The Gay Minute”: HBO Max has renewed The Other Two for a third season, TVLine has learned.
Series creators “Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider have created a sharp and poignant family story that is willing to show its characters’ imperfections while making us laugh hysterically,” HBO Max executive vice president of original comedy and adult animation Suzanna Makkos said in a statement. “It has been a true joy to welcome them and the cast to HBO Max, and I look forward to keeping them on hold with Brooke for the many conference calls to come next season.”
The Other Two stars Drew Tarver and Heléne Yorke as struggling siblings Cary and Brooke, who are stuck in the shadow of their pop star brother Chase (Case Walker) and talk show host mom Pat (Molly Shannon). Ken Marino costars as Chase’s manager (and Pat’s boyfriend) Streeter, with Josh Segarra playing Brooke’s goofy ex Lance.
After debuting on Comedy Central in January 2019, The Other Two moved to HBO Max for Season 2, which premiered last month. In this week’s Season 2 finale — read our post mortem with Schneider here — Brooke and Cary were about to achieve professional success, but then an overworked Pat collapsed on the runway of Chase’s fashion show, and Chase revealed he didn’t want to be a fashion designer in the first place. Streeter took the family on a tropical getaway for some much-needed R&R, while Cary stayed back to shoot his new movie… which was set to begin filming right before the COVID pandemic shut everything down.
TVLine’s Streaming Scorecard has been updated to reflect the good news. Happy to spend more time with The Other Two? Drop your thoughts on the renewal in a comment below.
One of the best laugh out loud comedys on right now. In my top 5 along with Ted Lasso, What We Do in the Shadows, Derry Girls and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (RIP).
This season was phenomenal. So happy it’s been renewed. The entire cast blows me away.
Yes!!! It ended too soon
So happy! Love this show!!!
Brooke’s meltdown of a teleconference meeting from episode 3 this season was an all-time classic. “Then you can **** in your pants…..You…..Chex….Mix…..*****.”
THIS MADE ME SCREAM! haha
I like this show and all but it really is stark how the shows that get renewed look versus the shows that get cancelled, like 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 and 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺.
Definitely something to keep an eye on, but maybe they’re trying to give shows they picked up from other networks a chance to grow a little. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to South Side, which is another show they moved from Comedy Central to HBO Max like The Other Two.
I really like The Other Two but you’re point is valid. Hopefully other shows will be given similar time to grow based on their quality and not demographics.
Considering how popular Euphoria and Gossip Girl are the demo is obviously watching hbo/hbomaxx but must not be connecting with Generation and Betty the same way.
This made my day! Thank you, HBO Max!
Yay!!!
Happy about this but really alarmed by how rewritten Cary was this season. As a gay man he now has the maturity of a 17-year-old (suddenly in S2 he’s never used a dating or hookup at, never had taken explicit photo, etc.). It’s such a clear and unrealistic character digression and I really hope they ditch it moving forward.
I am so excited to see this show come back for another season! I just hope the entire 3rd season doesn’t take place in the pandemic. Have the first episode deal with the fallout of Cary’s movie getting postponed, Alessia Cara and Brooke’s projects getting cancelled and Pat filming her talk show remotely from home.. then jump forward to post pandemic where Brooke and Cary are starting over… again.
