The Whitfield County Animal Shelter is now looking for the dog that attacked a stray in the Dantzler Circle area of Dalton.
Part of the attack was caught on surveillance video in a homeowner's carport off Dantzler Circle.
The video is graphic in nature, so NewsChannel 9 is choosing not to post it.
Kovu, a 1-year-old husky-mix, survived the attack and is in need of jaw reconstruction surgery.
According to Janice Williams with the non-profit Perry's Promise, Kovu was attacked by a brown dog. It's unclear if this dog is also a stray, or if his owners allowed him to run freely throughout the neighborhood.
Whitfield County Animal Shelter Director Diane Franklin says she went out Friday morning to try to locate the dog, but was unsuccessful.
Neighbors tell NewsChannel 9 Kovu has been roaming the neighborhood for at least month. They tried going door-to-door, posting to Facebook, and alerting veterinarian offices about a missing dog. But no one claimed him.
One neighbor told us, "Kovu is the sweetest dog I've ever met."
Another neighbor says she tried to get a shelter to take Kovu, but was told they were full.
Perry's Promise is offering a reward for anyone who can locate the owner of the dog. Williams says the attacking dog was joined by a brindle dog that did not participate in the attack.
NewsChannel 9 has reached out to the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Division. We are still waiting to hear back.
