Teenage girl shot in West Berkeley: Report

Police are investigating a shooting in West Berkeley on Thursday night which left a teenage girl wounded, according to Berkeleyside.

Officers were notified of an incident in the 1110 block of Channing Way near Byron St. at approximately 7:30 p.m., the paper reported after listening to emergency dispatch traffic.

One caller told police they heard two pops and a female person was bleeding. Authorities arrived on the scene and began investigating.

The 16-year-old victim, who was shot in the leg, was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

Police told community members just after 8 p.m. to "avoid travel on Byron from Bancroft to Blake and Channing from San Pablo to Browning."

No other information, including details about the suspect, was available.

KCBS Radio has reached out to Berkeley police for comment and has not yet received a response.
