Luke Hughes, Thomas Bordeleau (April 14)

Hockey Commissioners Association Rookie of the Month -- Freshman Luke Hughes was named the Hockey Commissioner's Association Rookie of the Month, the organization announced on Thursday (April 14). Hughes had a seven-point month for Michigan with one goal and six assists. He had a point in five of his seven games and was a +4. In the series with MSU he had a goal and a three-assists game. He has an assist in the Big Ten Championship game at Minnesota and added an assist in both games at the NCAA Regional. » HCA Release

Hockey Commissioners Association Player of the Month Runner-Up -- Sophomore Thomas Bordeleau was named the runner-up for HCA Player of the Month. Bordeleau had a nine-point month with three goals and six assists. He had at least one point in six of seven games, including a goal in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal. He had a goal and two assists in the Regional Final versus Quinnipiac and had two assists in the Big Ten Championship game at Minnesota. In the quarterfinal series with Michigan State, Bordeleau had a goal and two assists. He also won 52.8 percent of his face offs (66 wins) during the month. » HCA Release

Matty Beniers, Luke Hughes, Erik Portillo, Owen Power (March 9)

Big Ten Award Finalists -- Sophomore Matty Beniers was named a finalist for Player of the Year, sophomore Owen Power is a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year, Luke Hughes is a finalist for Rookie of the Year and Erik Portillo is a finalist for Goaltender of the Year. Beniers led the league in scoring with 26 points, averaging 1.44 points per game with 12 goals and 14 assists. He had a league-best seven power-play goals, four game-winning goals and had four more multi-point games than any other player in the league. Power led the league in assists per game, but that title has now moved to Hughes, who led the league in goals scored with 13 and finished second to Beniers in Big Ten points with 22 in 22 games. Portillo posted a 16-6 record in Michigan's 22 conference games and made 605 saves for a .925 save percentage. He was the only goaltender in the league to have more than one shutout in conference play.

Erik Portillo, Luke Hughes (Feb. 22)

Mike Richter Award Semifinalist -- Sophomore netminder Erik Portillo has been named one of 11 semifinalist for the 2022 Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in men's NCAA Division I hockey. With a 25-7-1 record, Portillo leads the nation in win percentage at 77.3 percent and is on a seven-game win streak, going 11-1 since January. Portillo is second in the nation in total saves with 882 and is seventh in save percentage at .927 and has a 2.12 goals against average.

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- For the second straight week Luke Hughes has been named the Big Ten First Star of the Week after leading Michigan in scoring. He scored three goals in a sweep of Ohio State to keep the Wolverines in first place in the Big Ten. The freshman defenseman gave Michigan the lead on Friday, 2-1, and added another goal late in the game to secure a 5-3 win. On Saturday, he added a highlight-reel goal in Michigan's 3-0 win. With 16 goals, Hughes has taken over the program record in goals scored by a rookie defenseman -- succeeding Dean Turner's 13 from 1976-77. He also tied the program record for freshman defenseman points in a season, along with Jack Johnson's 32 from 2005-06. » Big Ten Release

Luke Hughes (Feb. 15)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Luke Hughes led Michigan to a series sweep of Michigan State, winning 6-2 at home on Friday (Feb. 11) before a 7-3 win Saturday (Feb. 12) at Little Caesars Arena in the Duel in the D. He had six points on three goals and three assists and was a +5 while making his mark in the records book. On Friday, he scored twice and added one assist while finishing +3. He scored the team's second goal, on the power play, had the primary assist on the game-winning goal and scored again on the power-play in the second. On Saturday, he scored once and added two assists. He assisted on the team's second goal in the first, setting up teammate's short-handed goal. He then added the final goal of the game with 16 seconds left. Hughes moves into fourth on the team in points with 29 in 30 games and leads the nation's defenseman in both goals (16) and points (29). His goal on Saturday tied a 45-year-old record for goals scored by a freshman defenseman. » Big Ten Release

Matty Beniers (Feb. 3)

Hockey Commissioners Association co-Player of the Month -- Matty Beniers earned the HCA co-Player of the Month award for the month of January, helping Michigan to a 7-1 record during the month, including wins over ranked UMass and Minnesota and the only loss coming in overtime. In eight games, Beniers totaled 14 points, scoring five goals and nine assists while finishing with a +10 on-ice rating. He added eight blocked shots and won 55 faceoffs. The Olympian had multiple-point games in six of the eight contests in January. » HCA Release

Erik Portillo (Feb. 1)

Big Ten Second Star of the Week -- Erik Portillo went 2-0 at Wisconsin to help Michigan secure all of a possible six points on the road to remain in first place in the conference standings. He made 64 saves, allowing just three goals for a .955 save percentage and a 1.50 goals-against average. Saturday's game marked Portillo's 25th career victory. » Big Ten Release

Mike Richter Award Watch List -- Erik Portillo has been named to the watch list for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goaltender in Division I men's hockey, the Hockey Commissioners Association announced. Portillo has started every game for the No. 3-ranked Wolverines and owns an 18-6-1 record. He has two shutouts and recorded a career-best 44 saves in a win over Penn State last weekend. Matty Beniers (Jan. 18)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Matty Beniers paced Michigan with a four-point weekend, scoring twice and adding two assists as Michigan swept Penn State. On Friday (Jan. 14), he scored a power-play goal to make it 2-0 Michigan and then set up the next power-play goal as Michigan scored twice within 52 seconds. He also won 16 faceoffs in the 5-1 victory. On Saturday (Jan. 15), with Michigan down 3-1, Beniers turned the tide scoring late in the second and then setting up the tying goal in the third. Hobey Baker Nominees -- Matty Beniers, Kent Johnson and Owen Power have been nominated for the 2022 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Fan voting opens today and runs through Sunday, March 6. Brendan Brisson, Erik Portillo (Jan. 11)

Big Ten Second Star of the Week -- Brendan Brisson had a five-point weekend as Michigan swept No. 10 UMass with three goals and two assists. He scored the game's first goals on back-to-back nights and finished +5. On Saturday (Jan. 8), he scored just 1:14 into the game and followed by the primary assist on the game-winner and a second goal. The Vegas Golden Knights draft pick then had a point in each of the first two goals for Michigan on Sunday (Jan. 9), scoring the first and assisting on the second. » Big Ten Release

Big Ten Third Star of the Week -- Erik Portillo stopped 56 shots this weekend as Michigan swept No. 10 UMass. He stopped 28 shots in a 4-1 game on Saturday (Jan. 8) and picked up an assist -- his second of the season. The Buffalo Sabres draft pick made another 28 saves on Sunday (Jan. 9) in a 4-2 win. Nick Blankenburg (Dec. 14)

Big Ten Third Star of the Week -- Nick Blankenburg scored twice and added an assist in a split at No. 17 Ohio State. The defenseman scored the game's first goal on Friday (Dec. 10) and added an assist on Michigan's second goal in a 5-2 win. Michael Pastujov, Nick Blankenburg (Dec. 8)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Senior Michael Pastujov recorded his first career hat trick, a natural hat trick, in a 6-2 win over No. 11 Minnesota on Saturday (Dec. 4). He scored his first two goals in a span of 2:57 and then added his third goal, an unassisted short-handed tally, in the next period. Senior CLASS Award Candidate -- Nick Blankenburg has been selected as one of 20 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for "Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School," the award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages the students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Nick Blankenburg (Dec. 1)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Defenseman Nick Blankenburg led his team to a sweep of Niagara this past weekend, scoring three goals and adding two assists for five points. He finished +4 and added four blocked shots. On Friday (Nov. 26), he scored a goal and collected an assist in a 6-1 victory. Down 1-0 on Saturday (Nov. 27), Blankenburg scored consecutive goals, including the game winner, while adding an assist. It marked his first multiple-goal game since Dec. 3, 2020. » Big Ten Release

Matty Beniers, Owen Power (Nov. 16)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Matty Beniers scored both game-winning goals this weekend as Michigan swept Penn State on the road. He scored twice on Thursday (Nov. 11), marking his third game with multiple goals. He is the first Wolverine to have two goals or more in three straight games since Jason Botterill in 1997. Big Ten Second Star of the Week -- Owen Power had a six-point week in Michigan's sweep of Penn State in State College. The defenseman had a three-assist night, all primary assists, on Thursday (No. 11) in a 5-1 win -- including on the game-winner. On Friday (Nov. 12), he scored a goal and added two assists, once again on the game-winner in a 6-2 victory. Matty Beniers (Nov. 9)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Matty Beniers earned his first Big Ten First Star of the Week honors of his sophomore season. Beniers scored four of Michigan's 10 goals this weekend in a sweep of Michigan State. He scored twice on Friday, his 19th birthday, in a 7-2 victory and then added two more goals in a 3-2 win on Saturday in East Lansing -- including the game winner. Brendan Brisson (Oct. 19)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Sophomore Brendan Brisson earned his second consecutive Big Ten First Star of the Week honors. He was named the Ice Breaker Championship Player of the Game as Michigan knocked off No. 5 Minnesota Duluth and No. 1 Minnesota State for the tournament title. Brisson scored both game-winning goals and added one assist. His goal against Duluth was No. 4 on Friday's ESPN SportsCenter Top 10. On Saturday, with the Wolverines trailing by one after two periods, Brisson scored the GWG at 15:40 of the third and also had the primary assist on Michigan's second goal at 4:20. » Big Ten Release

Brendan Brisson, Owen Power (Oct. 12)

Big Ten First Star of the Week -- Sophomore Brendan Brisson had a five-point weekend as Michigan opened the 2021-22 season with a series sweep of Lake Superior State. He is currently tied for the national lead in points per game at 2.50 ppg after scoring three goals and two assists. All three of his goals were scored on the power play. He net the game-winning goal on Saturday (Oct. 9), as Michigan found itself in a two-goal deficit before rallying for the victory. » Big Ten Release

Big Ten Second Star of the Week -- No. 1 overall NHL Draft pick Owen Power recorded his first four-point game as Michigan opened the season with a 6-1 win over LSSU on Friday night (Oct. 8). He assisted on the first three Wolverine goals before netting his first goal of the season. On Saturday (Oct. 9), he added another assist for a five-point weekend. Thomas Bordeleau, Owen Power, Matty Beniers, Kent Johnson (Sept. 24)

Preseason All-Big Ten -- Michigan sophomores Thomas Bordeleau and Owen Power were named preseason All-Big Ten first team. The Tim Taylor Award recipient as the national Rookie of the Year, Bordeleau led the nation's freshmen in scoring with 30 points on eight goals and a team-best 22 assists in 24 games. The San Jose Sharks prospect tallied three game-winning goals, was a +18 and won 58 percent of his faceoffs. Power, the No. 1 overall selection in this year's NHL Draft, led the Big Ten defensemen in points with 16 points and finished with a +18 rating. He led the team in blocked shots with 40 and won a gold medal at the World Championship in June.

Fellow sophomores Matty Beniers and Kent Johnson were named to the preseason second team. Beniers, the second overall pick in the NHL Draft, led the Big Ten in on-ice rating with a +21 and led the Wolverines in goals with 10, while adding 14 assists. He won a gold medal at the World Juniors in January and a bronze medal at the World Championship in June. Johnson finished second on the team in scoring last season with 27 points on nine goals and 18 assists in 26 games. He was third in the nation in rookies points per game and highlighted by a five-point game versus Michigan State in January.
