RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Capitol Police gave the all-clear at about 1 p.m. Friday after asking workers in two state office buildings to shelter in place.

"The Division of Capitol Police became aware shortly after 11 a.m. that a caller had expressed concern about a possible active shooter at Capitol Square," a capitol police spokesperson wrote in an email. "Authorities determined the person was likely in either the Madison or Monroe buildings, so employees of those two office towers were asked to shelter in place while officers with Capitol Police, Richmond police and VCU police searched the structures and surrounding areas."

Nothing suspicious was found.

"I'm grateful to our law enforcement partners for their quick response in helping us today," Col. Anthony S. Pike, the Capitol Police chief, wrote in an email. "It's a lot of area to cover, but everyone responded immediately and worked well together to ensure the safety of our Capitol Square stakeholders."

The Madison Building is a high-rise located at 109 Governor Street next to Capitol Square, between Bank and Grace Streets. The Monroe Building sits behind it off of 14th Street.
