BRANDON — A deputy was shot Friday morning during a standoff at a home in the 1000 block of North Taylor Road that ended when the suspect was shot twice and then arrested, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The scene was active for several hours, with SWAT, a crisis negotiation team, a bomb squad and K9s on-site. The deputy, identified as Deputy Adriel Gonzalez, 33, was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment before being released, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday evening.

Multiple efforts to get the suspect, identified as James Allen Jackson, 48, to leave the home were unsuccessful, including the use of chemical agents, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When SWAT entered the home, Jackson was armed and combative, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Sankar Montoute, 38, shot Jackson two times, the release said. Jackson was taken into custody, and the Sheriff’s Office said he was alert as he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Jackson faces charges including attempted murder on a law enforcement officer and domestic violence, authorities say. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are pending, according to the news release.

Montoute, who has worked for the Sheriff’s Office since 2012, has no prior use of force incidents, the news release said. The shooting will be investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
