Chicago Symphony Orchestra Extends Riccardo Muti’s Contract

By Francisco Salazar

The Chicago Symphony has renewed Riccardo Muti’s contract as Music Director until the 2022-23.

The 80-year-old Italian conductor began his tenure with the orchestra in 2010, succeeding Daniel Barenboim, and is set to lead 10 weeks of concerts in Chicago and four weeks on tour, which will include a trip to China, Japan, and Taiwan.

During his final season Muti is expected to lead Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnic (Solemn Mass)” in June 2023 and the world premiere of a work commissioned by the CSO from Jessie Montgomery.

Muti recently opened the 2021-22 season with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra leading a program of music by Price, Sain Georges, and Beethoven. He next leads a program of Brahms and Beethoven at the end of September and another featuring music by Mazzoli, and Tchaikovsky.
