On Thursday night, FOX’s new singing competition Alter Ego aired the second half of its premiere. The series, hosted by Rocsi Diaz, uses modern motion-capture technology to put a totally new spin on the classic talent show format.

The show’s contestants design their own avatar, or “Alter Ego.” They control the avatar’s movements from backstage while they perform. The winner of this season will receive $100,000, as well as the mentorship of the show’s celebrity judges — Alanis Morissette, Grimes, Nick Lachey, and Will.i.am.

Thursday’s episode was dominated by two female vocalists who totally stole the show with their powerful voices. They both vied for a spot on the show’s coveted diamond pedestal, as the judges gushed about their talent.

Safara Shows Off a Powerhouse Voice on ‘Alter Ego’

Thursday’s standout performance came from Safara, aka Mariah Rosario, who shared that she didn’t want to be judged on her appearance. Safara was giggly and shy when talking to the judges, but her confidence came out when she started singing.

Safara performed “Good as Hell” by Lizzo. Her strong voice blew the judges away, and they voted to put her on the diamond pedestal, replacing the first performer Loverboy. Will.i.am called her the “complete package.” Morissette pointed out how much her confidence improved throughout the performance.

The judges later replaced her on the diamond with Aster, who was the last singer to perform. However, Safara was voted by the in-studio audience to move on, so we can look forward to another performance from her.

Aster Impressed the Judges with Her Gorgeous Voice

Aster, aka Kaylee Franzen, delivered a solid performance to close out the episode. She shared that she often feels self-conscious about her appearance, so it helps to be able to perform as her Alter Ego. Aster sang “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves, showing off a sweet, strong voice.

The judges were so impressed by her performance that they voted to put her on the diamond, replacing Safara. That meant that Aster automatically moved on to the next round without having to worry about the audience vote or the judges’ save.

Safara and Aster definitely have different styles of singing, but they’re both incredible talented. It just goes to show that there isn’t one type of voice that can dominate competitions like this. We can’t wait to hear what both ladies have up their sleeve as the show goes on.

Who Was Eliminated During Tonight’s Show?

The audience had the opportunity to save two contestants from elimination during Thursday’s episode, while the judges could save one.

Wolfgang Champagne and Safara were chosen by the audience to move on, while the judges chose to save the Loverboy. That means that Kai, aka Kobe Vang, was eliminated.

Kobe sang “Larger Than Life” in a larger than life way complete with 90s boyband dance moves. Despite his energy and talent, he was sent home performing the apt “Bye Bye Bye” on his way out.
