In terms of wins and losses, it has been a disastrous year for the Arizona Diamondbacks. They currently sit at 49-104, tied for the worst record in baseball with the Baltimore Orioles.

Despite that, their manager, Torey Lovullo received an extension to return for another year with the Diamondbacks.

Per ESPN, the deal runs through the 2022 season and their is a club-option for 2023. The Diamondbacks' general manager Mike Hazen seemed to recognize the situation and that the clubhouse still has their skipper's back.

“Through everything the season has presented, Torey did a good job of getting guys through this, even in a season where we might set a franchise-worst record,” Hazen said.

The “even in a season where we might set a franchise-worst record” part may have Diamondbacks fans shielding their eyes but realistically, not many expected Arizona to compete for a playoff spot or an NL West crown this year.

Lovullo wasn't naive to the possibility that he might not be returning, but he is happy to be getting another crack at things.

“I'm humbled and honored,” Lovullo said after Arizona's win on Thursday.

“I'm not an idiot. I know what can happen in these circumstances. I couldn't be more grateful for the trust they have in me. I'm lying if I said I never thought out it. Of course I did. These are turbulent waters. I'm not the same manager I was four, five years ago.”

Perhaps the Diamondbacks will look to be aggressive in the offseason in scooping up some free agents to help build around some of the younger talent on the roster.
