The Economic Development Partnership of Hillsdale County said it is appreciative of Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey’s inclusion of two Hillsdale County projects in the proposed 2022 state budget.

When the EDP met with Shirkey in April he asked how he could assist with helping to fund projects in Hillsdale County. Two critical need projects were already in discussion and outlined for him.

Hillsdale County Sheriff Scott Hodshire had already approached the EDP regarding the dire need to upgrade their radio communications system.

“Law enforcement agencies in surrounding counties, Ohio, Indiana and the Michigan State Police have upgraded their communication systems to 800 MHz, which precludes radio transmission with our deputies due to our outdated radio technology” Hodshire said. “This $210,000 in funding will completely upgrade our vehicle and office technology creating a higher level of safety for our dedicated staff and the citizens we serve.”

Hodshire added that he appreciated the letters of support from Judges Sara Lisznyai and Michelle Bianchi, as well as County Clerk Marney Kast, Commissioner Mark Wiley and the Economic Development Partnership of Hillsdale County.

To promote the Governor’s goal of 60% of Michigan workers with degrees or significant credentials by 2030, the Litchfield Regional Training Center is in need of training equipment to provide hands-on skills for the workforce.

The proposed 2022 state budget also included $150,000 to offset the significant expense to purchase equipment that is crucial for meaningful learning experiences. In a statement, City Manager Doug Terry expressed “gratitude to Senator Shirkey for his efforts to provide funding to enhance employment skills for the citizens of Hillsdale County and our region.

“The Economic Development Partnership of Hillsdale County was glad to coordinate efforts and help those two agencies obtain funding for these much-needed projects for our community. This could not have happened without Senator Shirkey and all of the assistance provided throughout the process by Ben Kaufman, Constituent and District Affairs Director, for Senator” stated Susan Smith, the county EDP director."
