WBAL-TV 11 News looked into the policies ride-share drivers must take to ensure everyone's safety.

For many ride-share drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft, being on the job can turn dangerous in an instant.

"In a worst-case scenario, you can stop the vehicle to the side and ask him calmly, 'This ride is ending right here. Please remove yourself from the vehicle,' which I've had several, but not as extreme as what happened this morning," rideshare driver Bruno Commodari said.

That was the case on I-83, police said.

Police said a ride-share driver called 911 about a passenger, identified as Gleb Volkov, 26, of New York. The driver told dispatchers he believed Volkov was possibly drunk and assaulted him while trying to get him to run off the road.

That's when the driver pulled over near Ruxton Road where the passenger left the car.

Soon after, investigators said the man was walking across the highway from a median near Northern Parkway where he was fatally struck by a car in the left lane.

"I hate stopping on the side of the road of a highway because you've heard so many horror stories. So, I would proceed -- I would not terminate a ride right in the middle of a highway, no. Unless it's unforeseen circumstances. You never know, like what happened this morning," Commodari said.

According to policies from Uber, a driver can cancel a ride for any reason.

While Lyft drivers can do so for multiple ones -- including if they are threatened.

"We have the option to terminate the ride whether we're penalized or not," Commodari said.

The driver involved in the crash did remain on scene as all lanes were blocked Friday morning for more than three hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
