With couples again tying the knot as Covid-19 restrictions ease, and some looking to break tradition on the path to the “new normal,” a UK-based company called Scrap Car Comparison has come up with a way for ardent suitors to combine their passion for their significant others with own their automotive enthusiasm, via custom made engagement and wedding rings designed in homage to a treasured car.

Reflexive eye rolling not withstanding, this is a bona fide venture. The company says it’s meant to “create a ring which really shows just how much you love your partner – and their love of cars.” Our more pragmatic side would caution car-loving suitors to double check about that last bit, and have a more-traditional diamond-mounted band squirreled away in a pocket in case it turns out the party of the second part was expecting something considerably more traditional, not to mention glittery.

But hey—cars and romance have a rich and storied intertwined history, from the days when most vehicles came with front bench seats and voluminous back seat playgrounds. Though there’s no way to get down on a bended knee, as tradition dictates, we suspect many engagements are sealed with a kiss behind the wheel.

What’s more, the auto-flavored fingerware, developed in partnership with engagement jeweler Edward Fleming, can be crafted with model-specific styling cues to be worn in remembrance of a beloved vehicle that has gone on to the scrap yard or a subsequent owner, or one with which an enthusiast has long held an unrequited love.

For example, a ring fabricated as a tribute to the original MINI Cooper uses red, white and blue stones and union jack flag engravings around the band, with a diamond setting based on the vehicle’s famed Minilight alloy wheel design. Can’t afford to give the future spouse a Lamborghini? Put a ring on it instead, in this case with a central diamond mounted in the vehicle’s distinctive Exhaust tip design, surrounded by carbon fiber hexagonal detailing, wit the band highlighted by sharply angular creases.

As with the cars themselves, the “Petrolhead Proposal” rings will be offered with options, including a personalized number plate engraving on the inner-band.

“On a daily basis we meet customers that are gutted to be saying goodbye to their cars, and leave the scrap yard wishing they could take a piece of it with them, says Dan Gick, Managing Director of Scrap Car Comparison. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but cars are a very big part of some people’s lives, and even their relationships, so we’re excited to offer the new service and make some happy moments even happier!”

The ride-inspired rings are being offered on a limited basis through November 5. All are created on a customized basis, and are certain to get hearts racing. Specific prices aren’t forthcoming, but we expect car-like costs depending on the design and materials used.
