The 2021 Twin Cities CIO of the Year ORBIE Awards program honors chief information officers who have demonstrated excellence in technology leadership.

Bruce Atkinson is chief information officer at Restaurant Technologies Inc. He delivers innovative technology solutions to support safer, smarter kitchens by leveraging the internet of things, big data and cloud computing. Prior to RTI, Atkinson held a variety of global leadership positions with Thomson Reuters. He has bachelor’s degrees from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and an MBA from the University of Saint Thomas.

Describe the greatest accomplishment in your current role, and explain why it is significant: At Restaurant Technologies, I had the opportunity to take our internet-of-things infrastructure to the next level. Data on the amount of cooking oil available in kitchens is essential for optimal delivery by our delivery fleet. We designed and built the IoT stack focusing on stability and scalability. We now leverage this technology for AutoMist, our hood and flue clean solution, and for our delivery trucks to create an optimized driver experience while delivering cooking oil. Not only does this open the door to gather various data from kitchens, it significantly lowered our overall IoT costs.
