Fiddle and piano duo Don and Cindy Roy plan to perform at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 29, at the Oasis of Music, held in the downstairs chapel of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, at 122 Ash St., Lewiston.

The music of the husband-and-wife team is rooted in both the Quebecois and Acadian traditions. Don was introduced to the fiddle at the age of 15 by his uncle Lou Mathieu, a noted fiddler within Franco-American circles, and soon he was winning fiddle contests throughout Maine and beyond. Joined by his wife Cindy on piano, he formed the Maine French Fiddlers in 1988, an ensemble which over the next several years took its distinctive Franco-American sound to a national audience with appearances at such notable venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Wolf Trap.

In 2018 Don and Cindy were honored to receive a National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment For the Arts.

Currently they direct Fiddleicious, a fiddle orchestra with over a hundred members, an act that has visited Lewiston on many occasions.

The Oasis of Music is a weekly music series of short performances of roughly thirty minutes in length, running from September to May. Admission is free, with donations accepted. The musical genres vary greatly, in largely, but not exclusively, acoustic formats. Covid restrictions of optional mask-wearing and social distancing are observed.
