BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Students at Bryan High School are performing These Shining Lives, a true story about the Radium Girls during the 1920′s and 1930′s.

These Shining Lives is about a group of women who paint the hour markings onto watch dials using a radium compound that glows in the dark, according to Bryan High School Fine Arts. Radium Dial, the company, tells them that there is no evidence that radium is harmful, and even says it has health benefits. Unfortunately, the women start to become sick and even get fired from the company, which causes them to take a stand.

The play’s director, Bailey Robert, chose this story because she wanted to share the real-life story of the Radium Girls.

“This is a true story, but little known,” said Robert. “It’s something important for the public to know about because it does impact people today. These women went to court to fight for companies to have to take care of their people and own up to what they were using to make things safe in the workplace. We are benefiting from what they did way back when.”

The students in the production got to dive deep and get to know the real-life stories of their characters.

“It’s really an honor because you get to tell the true impactful meaningful story that has shaped America’s labor laws today’s and so the things that happen in this show do not happen again,” said Kieran Wylie who plays Tom.

Performance Dates are:

  • Sept. 25: 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.
  • Sept. 30: 7 p.m.
  • Oct. 1: 7 p.m.
