English Dub Review: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S “Home Visit! (And Homes Not Visited)”

Overview

Riko invites Kanna, Tohru, and Kobayashi to her house to meet her maid fanatic sister, Georgie. While the others talk about maids, Kanna and Riko get awfully close while playing games together. Later, Lucoa informs the others that she is now living with a young mage named Shōta Magatsuchi who remains troubled over how to approach Lucoa about her daily, uninhibited contact after she showed up during a demon summoning ritual…

Our Take

It’s been quite a while since we checked in with most of the other side characters, so I guess it was about time to do so again. Fafnir and Takuya were definitely the most interesting so far, as their storyline highlighted more of Fafnir’s personality, while Kanna and Saikawa offered nothing interesting beyond what we got a couple of episodes ago. We also get some proper screen time with Lucoa as she continues to tease Shouta on a consistent level.

On the subject of Shouta, his subplot to find Lucoa’s supposed “weakness” was pretty cute, yet it was pretty sad after Lucoa ends up revealing the truth. I also found it funny with a scene that felt like meta-commentary as it indirectly took verbal jabs at certain anime studios that rely heavily on too much CGI. I don’t know if it was intentional but it caught me off guard in a comedic way.

Overall, this episode excelled in terms of world & character building. Fleshing out specific individual character dynamics and more attention to detail in its backgrounds made the proceedings more genuine when we see characters go about their daily lives. Other than that, it was a passable episode as usual. It’s stuff like this that should have been there before the introduction of Ilulu yet still remained wholesome.
