Green Bay Secures 5-set Win in Horizon League Opener at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, IN --The Green Bay volleyball team showed impressive resilience in a 3-2 victory against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons Thursday on the road at Gates Sports Center. The match was the first in Horizon League action this season for both teams.

The victory moved the Phoenix's record to 6-7 overall and 1-0 in Horizon League play.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Tiffany Paalman, who finished with 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .355. Alexandra Zakutney added 15 and Shannon Coughlin chipped in with 13 as part of a Green Bay attack that had four players with double-digit kills. Defensively, GB had three players reach double figures in digs, including Iro Chounta's 17, 10 from Abby Gardner, and 10 more from Calli Gentry.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Phoenix couldn't hang on in a back-and-forth first set, losing 26-24 in a game that featured five lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match.

SET 2 | Green Bay responded to pick up a 25-17 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Phoenix scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. Green Bay opened up as much as a 10 point lead at 20-10 before closing out the set, totaling 15 kills while only notching two attack errors in the process. The Phoenix hit .342 over the course of the set. The Green Bay offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Green Bay built on that second-set success with a victory in set number three to open up a lead at two sets to one. The Phoenix grabbed control of the set early when the score was 5-4 and never looked back to win 25-14. Green Bay led by as many as 11 points at 20-9 before finishing off the stanza. The Green Bay offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza. Green Bay's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Purdue Fort Wayne attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 11 Purdue Fort Wayne attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 4 | Green Bay couldn't keep the win streak going, as the Mastodons forced a fifth set with a 25-19 fourth-set win. The Phoenix trailed by as many as six points as Purdue Fort Wayne grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 and Green Bay wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up six times before the Mastodons took over.

SET 5 | Green Bay took a two sets to one lead and held off Purdue Fort Wayne's comeback attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-10 and the match 3-2. The Phoenix led from the opening point on in the fifth set to earn the victory. Green Bay ended on a high note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, five points, to finish off the set, totaling 10 kills with a .6 attack percentage while only registering one attack error along the way.
