Svendsen: RCSC needs to be upturned to shake change in Sun City

In reading the avalanche of mail to the Independent over the summer, I say way to go supporters of fair and due process for Karen McAdam and way to defend and support the rebirth of Recreation Centers of Sun City.
Have things changed since 1960? You bet. Had my child been born in 1960, I would have spent the first 10 years of his life making rules and setting boundaries. The next 10 would hopefully be to counsel and advise him as he applied the rules and boundaries to his personal life. Then we would learn if the rules and boundaries were too lenient or too harsh; the two of us would need to reach compromise and, hopefully, he would continue to grow into a moral and sensitive human being. After that, he has his own life and, as Gibran said, he “dwells in the House of Tomorrow where I may never go.”
Fast forward to 2021 and “my baby” is all grown up at the fine age of 61! Is my child thriving and enjoying life in a 55-plus retirement community or is he sitting in front of a TV, can of beer in his hand, grizzled and resentful of the passage of time?
This is how I see the RCSC board. They want time to stand still or reverse itself. They are stuck in the “formative years” (0- 10) of Sun City by passing a plethora of rules and regulations at nearly every meeting they have. The members they are charged to serve still want to play, but they are hamstrung from doing so by the weight of rules and regulations that are being passed with every passing day. So what if a pool noodle is too long or is (OMG!) inflatable! So what if someone wants to play mini golf against himself and imaginary friends? We need a rule for that?
I think the whole of RCSC needs to be upturned to have all the “change” shaken out of its pockets toward being a reflection of what members want and need. We may have “wanted” the fancy locker rooms at Fairway, but no way “needed” its size and especially did not want the surface in locker rooms that necessitate “slippery when wet” signs up so frequently that they really should be stenciled into the floor. The very same thing is on the verge of happening at Mountain View.
Sun City is not “the bastard” of the Sun Cities! We are the original and should be the best, the trendsetter. We are stuck in the 1960s, trying to be the child with the cool car. We can be both the child with the cool car as well as the child who embraces change.
