Michelle Johnson & Adam Diegel Lead Boston Lyric Opera’s ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’

By Francisco Salazar

Boston Lyric Opera opens its new season on Oct. 1  with Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana.”

The company will showcase the production at the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston’s Seaport District in order to ensure the safest possible performances for audience members, artists, staff, and backstage workers. The Pavilion’s open-air structure allows BLO to produce large-scale live performances, with a full live orchestra and chorus.

There will be two performances instead of the previously announced four.

BLO Music Director and Conductor David Angus will lead BLO’s Orchestra and Chorus with Giselle Ty directing the production.

The opera will star Michelle Johnson as Santuzza, Adam Diegel as Turiddu, Nina Yoshida Nelsen as Lucia, Javier Arrey as Alfio, and Chelsea Basler as Lola.

In order for audiences to attend the performance, audience members will be required to show either proof of full vaccination, a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance, or an antigen test taken within the previous 24 hours. Face masks are required for all patrons except when eating and drinking.

“Cavalleria Rusticana” will also be performed on Oct. 3, 2021.
