Black Voters Matter is a non-profit organization whose goal is to increase power in communities.
They do this by providing resources and tools that increase voter registration turnout. The organization also advocates for policies to extend voting rights and visits different communities to help with the environmental issues marginalized communities face.
“We wanted to highlight that in our community and help our communities practice self-advocacy in these issues but also helping them identify those issues in their communities,” Kiana Jackson, Black Voters Matter Southwest Georgia Regional Organizer.
The organization is currently on a 14-city tour in the state titled, “The Block is Hot” Education and Empowerment Tour.
In partnership with Savannah’s Armor Up and Environmental Awareness tour, which is visiting different districts in Savannah to provide easy access to free COVD-19 vaccinations, Black Voters Matter is able to assist with voter registration, and highlight individuals in certain communities.
“When we’re able to partner with people, community, and partners on the ground, we’re able to highlight specific communities. That’s why it’s very important for us to never swoop in, always highlight people who are already doing the work, to join and provide them with resources in order to assist them in their work,” said Jackson.
The "The Block is Hot” tour will be making a stop in Sylvester on Sept. 24 and will finish off the tour in Albany on Sunday.
