The end of the $300 per week enhanced federal unemployment payments have helped, but Wisconsin businesses a still dealing with a shortage of workers.
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) says those businesses may be dealing with that problem for a while longer. WMC President and CEO Kurt Bauer says more people are applying for jobs now that the federal benefits have lapsed.
Bauer says the state lacked enough workers before the COVID-19 pandemic and it doesn’t have enough now either.
He says the long-term solution is to get more young people interested in careers that don’t necessarily require a college degree, such as ones that have an apprenticeship program instead.
