A trial date has been set in the case of an Ottumwa man accused of killing his wife.

Gregory Showalter Sr., 61, is charged with first-degree murder in the July 2021 death of 60-year-old Helen Showalter.

Showalter was arrested in August 2021. Prosecutors have since added to his list of charges. He now faces three additional counts: abuse of a corpse, willful injury and domestic abuse assault impeding air or blood flow.

Last month, a judge granted Showalter permission to preserve his wife’s body for an independent autopsy. That examination was expected to take place earlier this week.

A state autopsy was conducted last month. Authorities have yet to release Helen Showalter’s official cause of death.

Showalter is set to face a jury Jan. 4, 2022.
