The Boston Red Sox are in the homestretch of the MLB regular season. They have just nine games left, and find themselves a top the American League Wild Card race. That lead will be put to the test as the New York Yankees, who are just two games behind the Sox as the second wild card team currently, are set to come into town for a crucial three game series starting off tomorrow.

It’s been a hectic season for the Red Sox up until this point. They started off looking like legitimate World Series contenders, collapsed to start the second half of the season, and have been slowly building themselves back up ever since. That’s culminated in a current seven game win streak that has seen Boston go from being out of a playoff spot to the top team in the wild card race.

The Red Sox are playing with a ton of confidence right now, and that was on full display in their two game destruction of the New York Mets. With the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays sitting right behind them, it was important for the Sox to continue their winning ways to prevent their grip of the top wild card spot slipping. And Boston did just that, and promptly sent the Mets packing, while also pretty much eliminating them from playoff contention.

It was a great two game stretch that was much needed considering how hot the Blue Jays have been recently, along with the fact the Yankees were beating up on the hapless Texas Rangers for free wins.

With a two game lead a top the wild card standings and two series against the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals after the Yankees, the Red Sox have the inside track for the top wild card spot as a result of this short series against the Mets. Here are 2 other thoughts from the series, starting with a potential issue in the bullpen.
