Coming into the Los Angeles Dodgers' series finale against the Colorado Rockies, Max Scherzer was being lauded by many as the best starting pitcher in all of baseball.
In his opening nine starts with the Dodgers, Scherzer was simply at the top of his game; he posted a 0.78 ERA to go along with an astounding 79 strikeouts recorded.
However, Scherzer's streak of dominant starts has now come to an abrupt end.
The three-time Cy Young award winner had a sluggish outing against the Rockies at Coors Field today — a ballpark in which he came into the game sporting a 5.88 career ERA.
Scherzer allowed five earned runs over five innings pitched against Colorado. Rockies left fielder Raimel Tapia's two-run home run off the veteran pitcher in the fifth inning was the highlight play for his team.

Scherzer had a 2.08 ERA before this underwhelming outing against the Rockies. Now, his ERA stands at a 2.28 figure, although it is still good for the top spot in the National League.
It remains to be seen on whether this roller-coaster showing from Scherzer will impact his bid for the 2021 National League Cy Young Award. He is currently in a tight race with the likes of Los Angeles teammate Walker Buehler and Milwaukee Brewers starter Corbin Burnes for this coveted award.
