Emmerdale spoilers follow from Thursday night's double bill (September 23).

Emmerdale may have just killed off Jamie Tate in a shocking car accident.

Jamie (Alexander Lincoln) took centre stage in a huge cliffhanger in the closing moments of Thursday night's double bill, as he prepared to leave the village for good.

The ITV soap's latest episodes saw pregnant Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) suggest to Jamie that they should elope that day and get married as soon as possible, allowing them to press ahead with their plot against Kim.

Jamie agreed, but continued to keep his options open by visiting his ex-girlfriend Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) and begging her for another chance.

Understandably, Dawn wasn't interested in a reunion with Jamie after his various misdeeds, even after he expressed regret over his turn to the dark side.

Meanwhile, as Gabby waited patiently for Jamie on a country road, he spoke to her on the phone and promised that he was on his way.

Kim (Claire King) and Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen) soon turned up to talk Gabby out of her marriage plans. However, with Jamie nowhere to be seen, Kim quickly realised that her wayward son had jilted his bride-to-be.

Kim warned: "He'll be miles away by now, doing what he always does when he can't take the heat. Marriage? Gabby, he can barely stand to be in the same room as you.

"He's gutless. He's told you a pack of lies. And now he's left you stood here like some pregnant spare part, because he doesn't love you or the baby and he never will."

Gabby tried to phone Jamie to prove Kim wrong, but the disgraced vet – who was driving away in his 4x4 for a fresh start – callously declined her calls.

Kim added: "He's not going to pick up. Oh wake up, Gabby. He's ditched you. He's gone. You're never going to see Jamie again."

These words were potentially something of a premonition, as Jamie got distracted by Gabby's calls and momentarily took his eyes off the road.

With Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) driving in the other direction, Jamie had to swerve to avoid a collision and his car went out of control. The vehicle came off the road, crashed into a nearby lake and disappeared underwater within seconds.

The life-or-death incident was one of Emmerdale's biggest surprises of the year so far. No mention of the crash had been made in any spoilers ahead of transmission.

Emmerdale bosses aren't revealing Jamie's fate, so fans will have to stay tuned to find out whether this really is the end for him.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
