Alejandro G. Iñárritu Wraps Production On His New Nostalgic Comedy 'Bardo (Or False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths)'

And just like that, Alejandro G. Iñárritu has wrapped production on his new film in Mexico City. Twenty years after shooting his first film, “Amores Perros,” the five-time Oscar winner returned to his native country, Mexico, to produce and shoot this new and entirely Mexican project. And it’s got a title, “Bardo (or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths).”

Up until this point, Iñárritu’s movie had been shrouded in secrecy. Still, it was known that the film was shooting in Mexico, without American stars, and that famed Iranian cinematographer Darius Khondji (David Fincher’sSeven” and “Panic Room,” Woody Allen’sMidnight in Paris”) would lens the movie. Previously known as “Limbo,” or referred to as such anyhow, some of the previously announced details were seemingly incorrect.

Written by Iñárritu and Nicolás Giacobone (“Birdman,” “The Revenant“), “Bardo” is a nostalgic comedy set against an epic journey. Here’s the official synopsis:

A chronicle of uncertainties where the main character, a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker, returns to his native country facing his identity, familial relationships, the folly of his memories, as well as the past and new reality of his country.

Bardo stars Daniel Giménez Cacho (“Zama“) and Griselda Siciliani (“The People Upstairs“) in the leading roles. The production design is by Eugenio Caballero, and the costume designer is Anna Terrazas.  Leonardo Alonso (“Sin Nombre”) and Andrés Almeida (“Y Tu Mamá También “) were said to have roles in the film, but so far, there is no mention of them in a new press release announcement for the film.

As said, Iñárritu is a five-time Oscar winner. In 2016 he won Best Director and Best Picture for “The Revenant.” Before that, in 2015, he shared in three Oscars for “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” including Best Picture and Best Director. He is also known for such arresting films a “21 Grams,” the Oscar-nominate “Babel,” “Biutiful,” and more. In 2018 he was awarded a Special Achievement Oscar for his Virtual Reality film “Carne y Arena.”

There is no word on when the movie will come out, but having just wrapped now, we surely won’t see the film until 2022, and maybe not until a fall film festival bow next September, unless Iñárritu and co. are hustling for Cannes.
