Former Arlington student wins Emmy Award for acting

Julianne Nicholson, a former Arlington Catholic student, took home her first career Emmy award on Sunday, Sept. 19 during the award ceremony in Los Angeles. 

Nicholson, a Medford native, took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie for her performance in the HBO series "Mare of Easttown," where she played Lori Ross, the best friend of the titular Mare who ends up involved in a murder investigation that Mare (Kate Winslet) is investigating in suburban Philadelphia.

Nicholson graduated from Arlington Catholic in 1989 and pursued a modeling career in New York City before getting into acting, eventually landing roles in both TV and film. Prior to her role in "Mare of Easttown," Nicholson was best known for her work in the 2013 film "August: Osage County" as well as her role as Detective Megan Wheeler on the TV series "Law and Order: Criminal Intent."

In her acceptance speech, Nicholson said she owed the award to women struggling across the world. 

“All the ladies out there in Philadelphia, in Kabul, in Texas or anywhere who are struggling sometimes, finding it hard to be happy sometimes, understanding that life can be a lot sometimes, but never stopping, never losing hope and never giving up," Nicholson said. 

Nicholson beat out Renee Elise Goldsberry, Kathryn Hahn, Jean Smart and Phillipa Soo for the the award. Two of her co-stars also won awards, with Kate Winslet taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie, and Evan Peters winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in Limited Anthology Series or Movie. 

Arlington Catholic congratulated Nicholson on winning the award on the school's social media channels.
