Jeremiah Ray Janes, 40, of Des Moines arrested Wednesday on charges of controlled substance violation, failure to affix drug stamp, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with official acts.

A Des Moines man struggled with West Des Moines police late Wednesday when they tried to arrest him with almost four ounces of methamphetamine.

Jeremiah Ray Janes, 40, of 340 N.E. 46th Ave., Des Moines, was charged with controlled substance violation, failure to affix drug stamp, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with official acts.

The incident began shortly before midnight Wednesday in the 7600 block of Office Plaza Drive in West Des Moines.

According to court records, officers of the West Des Moines Police Department found “a clear, plastic bag containing a white crystalline substance” that field tested positive for methamphetamine “in a zipped pocket” of Janes’ vest and “a working digital scale in his
backpack.”

The methamphetamine weighed 111 grams, according to court records.

A “multi-colored rubber and metal pipe with a burnt marijuana residue inside the pipe” was also found.

Janes allegedly “refused to follow orders” after the officers informed him that he was under arrest, according to court records, and Janes “was given multiple lawful commands, which he disregarded.”

Resisting arrest, Janes “had to be taken to the ground to secure him in handcuffs” and while on the ground, he “pulled his arms under his body and tensed his muscles” and “screamed at officers” that they “were violating his rights,” according to court records.

An officer’s body camera mount was broken in overcoming Jane’s resistance.

Janes allegedly “admitted to possessing and using the methamphetamine but denied selling the methamphetamine,” according to court records.

Janes is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 4 in Dallas County District Court.

Janes was convicted of two counts of second-offense possession of a controlled substance in 2020 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of second-offense possession of a controlled substance in 2018 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of controlled substance violation and failure to affix drug stamp in 2008 in Story County District Court. He was convicted of three counts of controlled substance violation in 2001 in Polk County District Court.
