After igniting a bit of a fight about Monica Lewinsky on yesterday’s episode (Sept. 22), The View co-host Sunny Hostin came back to teach her fellow panelists a lesson today. Right off the bat, as Ana Navarro and Joy Behar began discussing Liz Cheney as a prime presidential candidate for the Republican Party in 2024, Hostin was not having it.

The first hot topic on the agenda was Donald Trump’s potential 2024 candidacy. Behar, who is known for being vehemently against Trump, posed the idea that Cheney might be aided by former president George W. Bush. Navarro chimed in, saying that Republicans will need to speak up against Trump if they want to see future success in the party.

“If all of the Republicans who don’t follow Trump-ism, who are not cult members quit, withdraw, stay silent, then it becomes the Trump party.” Navarro said. “That’s why it’s so important that Liz Cheney wins. If Liz Cheney wins against Trump, with Trump coming after her and everything, it means that you can beat Trump. That he’s beatable. That you can stand up to him, you can keep your principles, you can keep your convictions. Be a conservative.”

Hostin seemed non-plussed by this idea, immediately ready to provoke Navarro into an argument: “I hate to throw cold water on you, Ana, as our republican on the panel. But everyone’s talking about Liz Cheney like she’s the Republican Party. My question is really: is the Republican Party worth saving? Especially for people of color. Liz Cheney, in my view, is no savior for people like me. Ana, I dare say people that look like you.”

After Hostin rattled off a list of Cheney’s most recent votes against people of color, Behar butted her way into the argument, adding: “Sunny, the alternative is even worse than her.”

Well, I’m saying, let’s just throw out the entire Republican Party,” Hostin fired back, earning some applause from the audience

Haines spoke up, playing both sides: “Now that we’re going there, I already think that a two party system is limiting.”

“But what’s redeemable about the Republican Party?” Hostin argued, not backing down from her stance.

Behar and Haines both stated that the Republican Party had once been “sane,” suggesting former presidents Eisenhower or Reagan as examples. Hostin, still unconvinced, came in hot again.

“Is Liz Cheney a sane Republican, voting against those things?” Hostin questioned.

Navarro, having enough of Hostin’s anger with the Republican Party, fired back: “She is. You might not agree with her on ideology, and I think that’s the point of this government,” she argued.

“But how is voting against aide to Puerto Rico, which is part of the United States, a sane ideology?” Hostin interrupted.

“I’m not saying you have to agree with her. Look, this is not about policy. You’re trying to make this about policy, this is about—” Navarro began, with Hostin cutting her off.

“Politics is policy!” Hostin said.

“It’s about convictions, principles, and values. You’re not going to agree with her ideology, nor should you,” Navarro said. “People in Wyoming probably don’t agree with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, nor should we expect them to. This is a huge country. What we have to learn to respect is diversity of thought.”

The argument wrapped there, but will the political discourse continue into tomorrow’s episode of The View, when Vice President Kamala Harris comes to visit? We’ll have to wait and see.
