NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that Mattress Firm, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity NYC and Westchester, donated 500 mattresses to Queens families who were affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ida which swamped with the region earlier this month.

The mattresses were handed out at First Baptist Church in East Elmhurst, Queens on Wednesday and Thursday.

Hochul discussed the generosity of New Yorkers after "facing waves of intense rain and historic flooding" the night of Sept. 1.

"[New Yorkers] helped their fellow neighbors clean, rebuild and restore their lives," Hochul said in a statement. "And now, with the generosity of Mattress Firm and Habitat for Humanity NYC, we can help to offer a little piece of hope to those who lost so much - a new mattress to lay their heads."

Ida killed 13 people in New York City, with a majority of the death toll in Queens, most of them in flooded basements in Queens. Effects from the powerful storm could reportedly cost "tens of billions of dollars."

President Biden previously approved an expedited Major Disaster Declaration to provide federal financial aid to affected state counties and residents.

"Part of the fabric of our culture at Mattress Firm is to lead with heart and humanity," said John Eck, president and CEO of Mattress Firm. Inc., in a statement. "That's why we are committed to investing in and supporting communities where we live and work. It is a privilege to provide 500 mattresses to New Yorkers in need and alleviate a fraction of the stress they are going through. We know the importance of a good night's rest, especially after such a trying time."

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards thanked Hochul, Habitat for Humanity and Mattress Firm for their help and promised his "office will leave no stone unturned to ensure our families are made whole in the wake of this disaster."
