Update: Click here for the latest report on the Fawn Fire.

Evacuations have been ordered because of a wildfire along Interstate 5 just south of Lake Shasta.

The Fawn Fire started late Wednesday afternoon in steep terrain near a limestone quarry. The California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection said a 30-year-old Palo Alto woman who was found in the vicinity has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately igniting it.

The fire grew rapidly on Thursday afternoon, going from 1,200 acres around noon to 5,500 acres at 4 p.m., CalFire said.  On Friday morning, the estimate was 5,850 acres (9 square miles) with 10% containment. Twenty-five structures had been destroyed and 2,000 were threatened.

The approximate perimeter is the black line on the map above.

The Shasta County sheriff ordered evacuations of a 40-square-mile area east of I-5 and south of the lake. The approximate area of mandatory evacuation is shown in orange on the map above.

Warnings have also been issued for adjacent areas; for updates and details, see the sheriff’s Facebook page, the Cal Fire SHU Twitter feed or the official maps embedded below.

The evacuation shelter is a church at 2225 Bechelli Lane in Redding.

Interstate 5 remains open.

The area is about 10 miles south of the scar of the Salt Fire, which burned more than 12,000 acres in July.
