An Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy is being credited for stopping a suicide attempt by tasering a 24-year-old Commerce Township man has he was about to plunge a knife into his own neck, authorities said.

It was just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday when sheriff’s deputies called to a home in the 2000 block of Evergreen Street looked through a window and saw a man arguing with a woman, then saw the man enter a bathroom. Deputies were let inside and found the man sitting on the toilet, holding a knife to his neck, the sheriff’s office said.

As deputies tried to convince the man to put the knife down, he pushed it into his skin and raised his other hand as if he was going to hit the butt end of the knife and drive it into his neck, the sheriff’s office said. As the man shut his eyes and took a deep breath, a deputy deployed a taser at him and retrieved the knife, the sheriff’s office said.

Star EMS called to the residence — located in the Stratford Villa mobile home park — transported the man to an area hospital where deputies completed l paperwork for involuntary treatment due to a suicide attempt.
