Cavelle Mighty, executive director of Rochester’s Wilson Commencement Park, and Edna Chimhau, Family Support Program administrator, were speakers at a recent meeting of the Victor-Farmington Rotary Club.

Their program had a twofold objective: to thank Rotarians for their support, and to bring club members up-to-date on activities and programs at Wilson.

Edna Chimhau, left, and Cavelle Mighty discuss the mission of Wilson Commencement Park during a meeting of the Victor-Farmington Rotary Club.

This gated complex on Joseph Avenue was founded in 1991. WCP offers program-based, affordable housing to low-income, single-parent families. There are 50 two- and three-bedroom townhomes available, as well as an 18-unit apartment unit complex for women who experienced domestic violence and those living with mental health diagnoses or disabilities.

Mighty and Chimhau shared WCP’s mission statement “to assist low-income, single-parent families transition to financial independence and personal self-sufficiency.”

The Early Learning Center is a support service offered to resident and community families to help break the cycle of poverty and welfare dependence for the next generation. Approximately 150 children ages 6 weeks through 12 years spend almost 12 hours daily at the center.

Victor-Farmington Rotary provides school supplies for the ELC, along with Christmas gifts, Easter baskets and Halloween parties for children. Mighty and Chimhau thanked the club for past support and their continuing relationship.

That same day, the club approved a $500 emergency grant to help two students at Franklin High School in Rochester whose family lacked the financial means for adequate clothing, footwear and school supplies. The emergency was resolved within 48 hours.
