Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has opened up about the seismic trade that sent him from Las Vegas to the Windy City.
Fleury spoke with The Daily Faceoff during a media tour in Chicago last week, saying there was no communication about a possible trade in the run-up to the announcement.
The Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender said he spoke with Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon twice after the season, and in both conversations, McCrimmon said he "wasn't sure" of the team's plans for Fleury.
"My agent had talked to him after the Draft and at that time, too, he was still unsure of what he wanted to do," Fleury told the hockey outlet. "Then I found out a few days later that I got traded."
The Golden Knights dealt Fleury to Chicago in July in exchange for the rights to minor leaguer Mikael Hakkarainen. The team would release Hakkarainen three weeks later.
Allan Walsh, Fleury's agent, said his client learned about the trade as news broke on social media.
The goaltender said he imagined he would retire as a Golden Knight after joining the team via the 2017 expansion draft but has now committed to moving his family to Chicago.
"After playing in the bubble in Edmonton [in the 2020 NHL playoffs] for basically two months, I just couldn’t see myself not seeing my kids for that long," Fleury said in the interview.
The Golden Knights will host the Blackhawks twice in the upcoming season -- Saturdays Jan. 8 and March 26. The third game in the series will be held in Chicago on Wednesday, April 27.
