With just one race remaining in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, Doug Coby is heading back to his home track this Saturday, September 25. Coby will drive the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified in the NAPA Fall Final 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway, the season-finale for the tour.
Although he isn’t in the quest for the championship this year, Saturday’s race will still mark an important moment for the Milford, Connecticut, native when it comes to the points battle.
In the driver’s standings, Coby is sixth — 78 points from the lead — but he is only 10 points behind third-place Ron Silk. In fact, the drivers from third to seventh in the standings are separated by just 13 points total. However, Coby is third in the owner’s point standings — comfortably 20 points up on Silk’s No. 85 team. When it comes to the season-ending point fund, the owners receive the payout — and Coby is looking to seal third-place on that front.
The six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion is a multiple-time Stafford weekly series champion and a 12-time tour winner at the half-mile. In June, he won the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX Series) race at his home track. The goal is to win the Fall Final.
“Just trying to end the season there with a win,” Coby said. “Riverhead took us out of the second-place battle in the owner’s points. We just want to maintain the owner’s points in third. We’re going to try some more new stuff in our setup package and continue to try and build our Stafford program even further. We want to build our notebook back to the point where we have an advantage there like we had before. Ending the season with a win would be a big accomplishment.”
A full race day at Stafford includes practice from 1:20-2:20 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 4 p.m. The green flag for the NAPA Fall Final 150 will drop at 6 p.m., live on NBC Sports Gold’s TrackPass, and tape-delayed on NBCSN. So why can’t the fall final be on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon this year?
This looks like one of those Covid19 lessons learned like business travel I’m thinking.
Last year shows were cut back in terms of divisions in some events necessitated by the crowd restrictions. Fast forward to 2021, the Sizzler and now Fall Final have changed. Days not linked and new line ups. A full card tonight of regular racing at $20 is a great opener. Followed by the Fall Final that is support division light in the traditional sense with only the SK Lights, a Vintage race and the LLM’s.
That’s fine isn’t it? $40 for the event without the two top divisions may seem tough compared to the past and even the GAF 150 in August but really does anyone ever really care that much about the support divisions for a NWMT show? That may be the lesson learned from 2020. Fans like the public at large adjust and move on knowing change in itself may have sound logic behind it. If two less purses provides a buffer as far as profit margins are concerned and makes next year NWMT events more viable then more power to them. I as much as anyone enjoy the opens but also believe it would be a giant step back to not have at least one NWMT event next year and preferably two. They’re just bigger and better no matter what the naysayers claim.
As for the support division you know the SK Lights will not disappoint and the LLM’s are no longer a refreshment and rest room break either. That’s what the Vintage race is for.
I was considering making the trip up from New Jersey for this. Went in 2019 1st and only trip to Stafford. Love the place you got up there. I got a big race on the dirt tommorow much closer to home and weekly Wall Stadium action still going on. Track pass and Floracing are great to have with me! Been following Stafford and the NWMT all season long! Great time to be alive lol!
