Given that Kim Kardashian was the walking embodiment of a blackout curtain at the 2021 Met gala in a Balenciaga t-shirt dress, catsuit, and face mask, the reality star appears to have taken some of the budget she would’ve otherwise allocated to jewels or an extravagant gown and invested it all in her hair instead.

It turns out that the thigh-grazing hairstyle she wore that night, the only part of her that was actually visible, set Kardashian back $10,000 according to her hairstylist, Chris Appleton. Appleton responded to a handful of fans’ questions on his Instagram Stories on Tuesday, including one that asked how much the KKW Beauty founder’s 75-inch ponytail cost. He explained that it cost $10,000 due to all of the extensions involved. He also described the process used to make the ponytail look so sleek. Appleton prepped the hair using ColorWow Hair Dream Coat then, once dry, sprayed the brand’s hairspray through the roots and used the Leandro Limited Scalp Care brush to pull the hair back into a sleek ponytail. He finished off the look with a Leandro Limited flattening iron and ColorWow Hair Extra Shine Spray.

And while that very pricey pony may have been the only part of the reality star that fans could see, that didn’t stop Kim from also getting a full face of glam underneath that hood. Her makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, shared a photo on his Instagram account the day after the Gala showing off a few of the products he used to prep the star for fashion’s biggest night. Kardashian’s look for the evening included a whole lot of skincare by La Mer, as well as the brow pencil, brow gel, and eyeshadow palette from Dedivanovic’s eponymous cosmetics line. The makeup artist also shared a behind-the-scenes photo of her final beauty look, captioning the shot, “Behind the mask,” with a winky emoji.
