Typically, Palace City Profiles showcases families that call Mitchell home. This time, we learn why Mitchell is also a great place to live if you are single. Reid Smith’s winning smile demonstrates how he feels about living, working, and recreating in Mitchell.

Born and raised in Alexandria, Reid is a proud Beaver graduating from Hanson High School. Choosing to stay in South Dakota, he then headed to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, majoring in business administration.

After graduating with his bachelor’s degree, Reid thought Sioux Falls would be a great place to live. He began his banking career with CorTrust Bank, which has a rich South Dakota tradition.

Reid loves the idea of local banking, and CorTrust has a proud history.

Founded in 1930, CorTrust, originally Livestock State Bank, served farm families in Artesian. It is now a fourth-generation, family owned bank with 36 locations in South Dakota and Minnesota. In 2019, it was named Best Bank of South Dakota by Forbes Magazine.

“CorTrust is one of the biggest reasons I moved back to Mitchell,” Reid said. “I did like my time living in Sioux Falls, but after two years when a job opened up back in Mitchell, I was more than ready to move back.”

Mitchell’s draw is that it is where his family and friends are. He says, “Small town South Dakota is where my heart is.” “I love the Mitchell area and I couldn’t be any happier being back these past four years.”

Besides his love of working for CorTrust, Reid said, “Living in Mitchell gives me a lot of time for hunting and fishing.” “I did play baseball for the Alexandria Angels team, until I hurt my shoulder a few years ago.” “I now go to baseball games as a spectator.”

During the summer, Reid also enjoys time with family and friends as they spend time at his parent’s cabin at Lake Hanson. During the fall, you will catch him hunting and then in the summer at the lake fishing. He enjoys all the fruits of South Dakota.

Reid also loves to travel just recently spent time down in Nashville, finding the people just as friendly as they are in the Midwest. His extended family travels to Puerta Vallarta annually for a week enjoying the Mexican beaches and culture. An Alaskan Cruise is planned for June when his brother graduates from dental school at Creighton in Nebraska. Reid hopes he finds a dental practice in Mitchell so they can enjoy time together.

In addition to work and recreation, Reid devotes time as a member of the Chamber of Commerce serving on the Connect Mitchell Committee. He also is a member of the Mitchell Housing Authority. They are a committee concerned with helping people find affordable housing in the Mitchell Area.

“Affordable housing for our community members continues to be a real challenge,” he said.
