VW Committee approves $12 million in funding to reduce diesel emissions across Indiana

$12 million allocated in this latest round of funding.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Fund Committee (Committee) recently awarded $12 million to 29 projects around the state that will reduce diesel emissions in local communities. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) received 31 quality applications totaling $23.4 million for the $12 million allocated in this latest round of funding.

Vehicles funded include four electric and 74 propane school buses, one electric and six compressed natural gas (CNG) transit buses, one electric utility truck, one electric short haul truck, and two electric and 18 CNG refuse haulers. In addition, five non-road projects were funded including a clean-diesel locomotive and two tugboats, four electric terminal tractors, and two electric material handlers. 15 first-time applicants to the program were awarded funding spanning 13 counties across the state.

In addition, the Committee awarded funding to South Shore Clean Cities (SSCC) to implement a statewide Education, Outreach, and Marketing Program. The Committee previously selected the Indiana Utility Group (IUG), comprised of eight Indiana utilities, to manage the direct-current fast charging (DC Fast) program which will include 61 DC Fast stations across Indiana. SSCC will work cooperatively with IDEM and the IUG to support the rollout and sustainability of Indiana's statewide electric vehicle charging network.
