NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WLNE)- The Atlantic Shark Institute announced Thursday that they were contacted about a Sand Tiger shark that had washed up on Block Island earlier this week.

A beachgoer spotted the shark while walking on the beach on the southwest point of the island, the institute said.

“We really appreciate being notified about these sharks as otherwise, we wouldn’t have a good sense of where, when and how often these events occur”, said executive director John Dodd.

Sand Tiger sharks are considered critically endangered worldwide by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
