AVON LAKE, Ohio -- Finn is not only my No. 1 hero, he is Hero No. 1176 in the Morris Animal Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study.
This is the most significant study ever conducted in veterinary medicine, a groundbreaking effort to learn how to prevent cancer and disease in dogs. The study will identify genetic, nutritional, behavioral and environmental reasons for why golden retrievers may develop health and other problems.
Finn has been a Hero for the past nine years. Once a year, our veterinarian, Dr. Anita Poling of Avon Animal Hospital, does an extensive exam and submits information to the Morris Animal Foundation.
As Finn’s “Mom,” I also submit a lengthy questionnaire about Finn’s habits during the past year. Someday, the database will be opened and may lead to answers to assist other golden retrievers.
In his younger years, we chased squirrels at Weiss Park and swam in Lake Erie. Now, at almost 10 years young, Finn has fallen victim to his second cruciate ligament tear. We are awaiting surgery soon.
Finn will live out the rest of his days leading a somewhat sedentary life -- no more squirrel chasing and jumping.
He resides with Mom and Jim in Avon Lake.
