Win or lose, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman will have his work cut out for him after the 2021 World Series.
By now, it’s clear the club needs to upgrade its starting rotation and figure out a long-term plan at shortstop after moving Gleyber Torres back to second base.

And who ends up being the everyday first baseman in 2022?
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden looked into his crystal ball:
I expect they’ll try to improve the top of their rotation and could pursue free agents such as Max Scherzer, Kevin Gausman or Robbie Ray. I think they’ll pursue an upgrade at shortstop and could target free agents such as Corey Seager, Trevor Story, Carlos Correa or Marcus Semien. I think they’ll try to deal Gleyber Torres; my favorite trade idea is to package him with first baseman Luke Voit to land Matt Olson from Oakland. ... The Yankees should make a run at center fielder Starling Marte, another impending free agent, to improve the athleticism and speed at the top of their lineup. I’d also like to see them trade with the Cubs for catcher Willson Contreras, an upgrade defensively over Gary Sánchez.
But before any of that can happen, the Yankees need to finish out the 2021 season. New York jumped back in the playoff picture after Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Texas Rangers. That, when combined with the Toronto Blue Jays’ 7-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, moved the Yankees into the second American League Wild-Card slot behind the Boston Red Sox.
