PHENIX CITY, Al. — A man who was attacked by a pit bull has died from his injuries, authorities said.

Phenix City, Ala. police responded to a report of a dog bite early Tuesday morning, news outlets reported. Officers found Frank Cobb, 70, suffering from the attack.

Cobb was taken to a hospital in Columbus, Georgia. He was then transported to an Atlanta hospital where doctors attempted to re-attach his limbs, his family told WRBL-TV. He died Tuesday evening.

“I was walking back from the Big Cat. I heard someone say help. I heard dogs barking. It was dark and they were black. I went to help Red. It was blood everywhere. I was devastated, I mean flabbergasted. I tried to help Red. I grabbed the dog by its neck and by his nose and I took off running down the street so he could chase me, but he had already seen the blood,” Witness Kenny Bo told WTVM-TV.
