During the past year, we have seen plenty of spy pictures of the upcoming Porsche 911 GT3 RS which is gradually getting closer to production as we approach its rumored early-2022 release date.

The latest set of spy shots comes from the public roads around the Nürburgring and inside the actual track, where Porsche is making sure their upcoming model is as good as it gets.

For the new model, Porsche engineers were focused on motorsports-inspired aerodynamics, a sophisticated chassis setup with double-wishbone suspension at the front, plus the usual weight reduction measures.

In terms of aero, even astronauts from the International Space Station have already noticed the larger intakes on the front bumper, huge scoops on the bonnet, wider fenders with huge vents on them and behind the front wheels, and of course the massive adjustable rear spoiler with the somewhat divisive swan neck design. There is still camouflage on the rear bumper probably hiding something cool, but we can already see the beautiful diffuser with the centrally mounted dual exhaust pipes.

As for the weight reduction, the conventional door handles replacing the pop-out units of the rest of the 992 range are indicative of the extent Porsche went to save a few more grams in favor of performance. We can also see new wheels that are expected to be lighter, resting in front of huge brakes with yellow-painted calipers.

The GT3 RS was always considered as one of the best track-focused sports cars in the world, but in typical Porsche fashion, each generation signals a significant improvement over its predecessor. The fact that the latest 992 GT3 is more than 17 seconds quicker than the model it replaced around the Nurburgring – with a lap time of 6:59.927 minutes against the 7:12.7 of the 991.2 GT3 – speaks volumes for Porsche’s efforts.

The rear-mounted naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine is rumored to get a 4.2-liter displacement in the GT3 RS, producing somewhere between 532-572 hp (397-427 kW / 540-580 PS), bringing a healthy increase over the 513 hp (383 kW / 520 PS) of the outgoing model.

Initial reports claimed that the 911 GT3 RS would be revealed in late 2021 but it seems that an early 2022 premiere is more likely.
