NEW YORK — A slow-moving cold front brought the potential for flooding with serious downpours Thursday night. The rain should diminish in intensity during the overnight hours; however the showers will linger into Friday morning. Numerous flash flood warnings were issued across Northern New Jersey as rainfall rates in excess of 2 inches per hour caused flooding on area roadways and winds have been gusty causing a few scattered power outages as well.
Heavy downpours are possible throughout the city through the evening hours before it starts to shift east late at night. Winds will continue to gusty at around 30 to 40 mph at times. Temperatures will gradually drop into the lower 60s by daybreak.
The rain is expected to cause flooding in low-lying areas. Residents of Queens, where Ida flooding devastated homes and businesses.
A few showers will linger around Friday morning. Across eastern sections of Long Island, there could still be a few downpours before it finally moves out. Gradually, skies should start to clear out during the latter part of the day. Winds will be from the northwest bringing in a cooler breeze with highs topping out in the lower 70s.
Through the weekend, expect a good deal of sunshine. A weakening frontal boundary could bring a few clouds late on Saturday and it could linger into part of Sunday. No rain will be expected as the front passes. Temperatures will hold in the mid 70s for both days.
The pleasant weather conditions will continue on Monday. It will be sunny with temperatures warming up into the upper 70s.
A cold front will bring back the risk of showers on Tuesday, and cooler air will follow behind heading into the middle part of the week. Temperatures may struggle to hit 70 degrees by next Thursday.
